Found near Radin's rotting body was a bible, open to the passage in Isaiah including "let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die." Indeed, after reading Ms. Hollingsworth's description of the trial, it seems almost a miracle that, in October 1985, the owner of the Country Walk Babysitting Service, one Frank Fuster, was found guilty of 14 counts of abuse. ''It was an almost perfect crime,'' Ms. Hollingsworth comments, and this could be said of child sexual abuse in general, since it is usually committed in the absence of witnesses or corroboration other than the testimony of the small victims. Mr. Fuster was convicted of molesting the children entrusted to his wife's care in their home in the middle-class Dade County suburb of Country Walk, a planned development that was intended to be an idyllic refuge from the anxieties of urban Miami. Of course, given the media coverage, the triumph of the Fuster prosecution was a consuming matter for Dade County residents. But the importance of the case transcends Floridians' concerns. This book is almost a primer for parents, criminal justice personnel and social service workers in the do's and don'ts of attempting to prevent, and make prosecutable, ''the most unprosecutable crime in the nation,'' as the book describes it. Ms. Hollingsworth shows why parents and children become such easy prey to their caretakers as she ranges from the primitive attempts to screen day care workers to the ignorance of parents and even pediatricians about the telltale signs of sexual abuse. As in all such cases, one of the greatest agonies facing parents of the victims is the decision to permit their children to be ''raped again, this time by the system,'' as the book states it. Putting children on the witness stand exposes them to the untender mercies of a judicial system that made it unremarkable for one of Mr. Fuster's attorneys to boast, ''the last time I had a 4-year-old on the stand, it took me less than 45 minutes to break her down.'' The author also shows how parents of victimized children can work to protect other children. In this case the parents not only put pressure on local prosecutors, they made unceasing efforts to create the state child-protective legislation that was unanimously passed after initially being given little chance of success. Ms. Hollingsworth, now a freelance writer, was a local television news editor whose series on day care abuses became a catalyst for bringing the Country Walk parents and prosecutors together. Her presentation of the case includes trial testimony and the verbatim reports of psychiatrists and polygraph operators, and it may be too thorough for some readers' taste. But it has a mesmerizing quality that makes this book as compelling as it is heartrending. Readers are likely to recoil from accounts of Mr. Fuster's actions. It is sickening stuff. But such details account for both the public attention accorded the case and the outrage that animated parents and prosecutors alike - indignation that led to Mr. Fuster's life sentence. Mr. Fuster's unspeakable acts were more than just the repeated sexual abuse of children; the victims also testified that he led them in satanic rituals in which both crucifixes and excrement played a part. Some of the children's most disturbing testimony involved descriptions of the ways in which he terrorized them: one method was to force them to watch him mutilate pet birds, an object lesson to tots who might disclose the abuse. THE author cites the specifics of these revolting rituals to illustrate disturbing similarities in some of the multiple-victim sexual-abuse cases that have recently been discovered in other states. She suggests that such acts are fostered by a nationwide network of pedophiles who swap information and videotapes in a mega-dollar child-pornography business the F.B.I. would do well to target. Certainly, the Florida parents and children are fortunate to have this volume to document and bear witness to their collective nightmare. For the children, perhaps the book will help them make sense of their emotional scars in later years. But the horror, when one finishes ''Unspeakable Acts,'' is to imagine how many other Frank Fusters are now abusing children in situations where parents are not as aware, prosecutors are less committed and state laws less conducive to justice. In this case, though, the anger that rises on learning of Mr. Fuster's acts is tempered by the ultimate success of his prosecution. During the trial Bigham admitted that he had previously abused a child, stating: “My sexual attraction to children had been through photographs.  Having had a real sexual experience with a child, and finding it confusing and later horrible, I suppose I was trying to climb back on my fantasy bandwagon of photographs.  I was revolted.”  He also told the court that he thought his actions were lawful because it was with parental consent.Hughes’s ten-year old daughter bravely gave evidence in which she detailed what had happened with Bigham and Spielman.  She also described how she had been taken to a “posh house” in Holland, where they had stayed for two days and where there had been “cameras and lights.” (Who owned this house?)  Her young brother also gave similar evidence.  According to her children, at some point Hughes had taken them to Rotterdam where they were filmed “in grotesque sexual activity” with several people.  Hughes had been paid £100 plus expenses for the use of her children whom she professed to the court that she loved. Surveillance The sordid events only came to light because police were following Spielman having received information from Los Angeles police, who had arrested Eric Cross. (See below.)  It’s not known for how long the surveillance had been going on, but a number of Playland trials had taken place in the few years beforehand, and we now know that PIE members were closely connected to some of the firm at Playland, according to Anthony Daly’s book, which I covered here.  Both Bigham and Spielman were members of PIE and Anthony recalls seeing them both at a meeting in London. The court heard how Woman Det Sgt Reay Barker followed Spielman’s van from the station to Hughes’s home, where the two men spent 38 minutes and during which time Hughes never left the property.  Four days later, Det Sgt Barker executed a search warrant at Hughes’s home looking for obscene photographs.  During her interview, Hughes claimed the men had been visiting in a social capacity and denied any knowledge of photographs having been taken, although Det Sgt Barker claimed she was paid £10 for allowing her two young daughters to be abused.  However, three local shopkeepers claimed that Hughes had visited their shops at the time police claimed she was home. Both Hughes and Spielman appealed against their sentences in 1980, but lost Verdicts • Victoria Hughes was jailed for four years.  Mr Justice Forbes said Hughes had supplied her children to be used in an… “abominable way.  That would be bad enough if they were just children, but they were your own.  It seems different for me to imagine a worse case of indecent assault on a small girl than that in which a mother provides the child for that purpose.”  Hughes subsequently lost her husband, her children and her home. • Herman Spielman was sentenced to six years in prison for possessing and publishing obscene photographs, indecently assaulting a 10-year old girl and inciting the girl to an act of gross indecency with Bigham.  The judge said that Spielman “had provided children so that men could act out their perversions” and who “started an international traffick in child pornography.” AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST:RICHARD BIGHAM;VISCOUNT MERESY;LORD NAIRNE,surprisingly,was given a 12month suspended sentence and returned to the HOUSE OF LORDS a year later and stayed there until 1999,even though he played a huge role in the abuse of those two girls(described as sadistic and cruel by one of the girls in the court) and was a contributor to the pie network(he was a producer of kiddie porn himself,mostly pictures).
