This is the HBO documentary on the case by Nick Broomfield. Lots of interesting information. Mentions the camera Lonnie Franklin had in the back of his van, the trading of photos and videos with other people, and his son mentioning how his dad was thanked for keeping "the streets clean" - https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3i4h27
Serial Killer Capital: Los Angeles
From 1984 to 2007, dozens of women were sexually assaulted and murdered in South Los Angeles. Police began hunting one suspect, until they made a stunning discovery: four brutal serial killers were stalking the same area at the same time.
(I have not seen this yet but it looks interesting! :)
Officer Rickey Ross - Ross was charged with the murders after his gun was forensically linked by the LAPD to the bullets from the murders.
One of the few known photos of Los Angeles serial killer Chester Turner before his arrest. One of the infamous Southside Slayers, Chester killed at least 15 people from 1987 to 1998. His exposure came out in 2002, when DNA profiling linked him to the murders.
The Grim Sleeper with possible links to the Belize Ripper (Jack the Butcher) who raped and murdered five girls between 1998-2000.

"The Grim Sleeper is the U.S. based serial killer who has caught plenty attention in the U.S. media and has also been featured by News Five. Lonnie Franklin has been arrested for numerous murders dating back to the 1980’s. Franklin is called the Grim Sleeper because U.S. investigators believed that he went long years in hibernation between murders. The alleged sleep period also showed consistency to the time of the child murders in Belize which were attributed to “Jack”. News Five has followed Franklin’s blood trail because he has roots by marriage to a Belizean woman, Sylvia Castillo. Since our first story aired, the aunt of one of the local murdered girls said she saw Franklin years ago on Neal Pen Road in Belize City. The news tonight is that while Franklin is directly tied to over a dozen murders of women including minors, images of one hundred and sixty women were found on Franklin’s property. According to the following report from KTLA 5, officers are trying to establish if these women are also victims."
"During our first inquiry into the sleeper case in July 2010, News Five asked Police Minister Doug Singh and Commissioner of Police Crispin Jeffries to request copies of Franklin’s travel records so it could be seen when he may have visited Belize. Two weeks ago, we checked with Singh but the information had not been obtained as yet. And in what may be just another case of coincidence, a van used in the US to dump a murder victim, belonged to a church in Franklin’s neighborhood. That vehicle was released and eventually wound up in another country. You guessed it, in Belize."
Winterwatch wrote an article several weeks ago about the "Southside Slayer" stating that the murders of black women starting in 1972 until 2010 was done by seven or more serial killers. This was written four days after me and Patrick's discussion about Lonnie Franklin.

UPI article on Lonnie Franklin

"Franklin is charged with the sexual assault and slaying of 10 African-American women. During his arrest in July, police said they discovered approximately 1,000 photographs and hundreds of hours of videotape of women, much of the material showing the women partly undressed and in sexual poses, the Times reported."
"More than a dozen of the photos showed women who are relatives or friends of Franklin, said his lawyer, Louisa Pensanti, who criticized the photos' release."
"Detectives invited family members of the women Franklin is suspected of having killed to view the pictures before release, the newspaper said."
https://www.upi.com/Archives/1986/11/04/Southside-Slayer-may-have-claimed-18th-victim/9385531464400/
"All the victims of the Southside Slayer were strangled, stabbed, or both, and their bodies dumped in isolated places, mostly alleys, in South Los Angeles or adjacent areas."
"Some victims were tortured with slash wounds before being strangled or stabbed to death in a manner described by some detectives as overkill. It has been the similarities of the slash wounds on the bodies that has led police to believe the murders are linked."
"Police Lt. John Zorn, who heads the joint city-county investigation, has said from the outset that there may be more than one killer, a belief echoed Monday by a task force detective who said it appears that 'several copycat killers' may be involved."
"Three prostitutes survived attacks by a man believed to be the killer, and they gave a police artist enough information for a composite sketch of a suspect -- a middle-age black man."
UPI artcles on the Southside Slayer(s)
https://www.upi.com/Archives/1986/07/29/Southside-Slayer-claims-17th-victim/2664522993600/
"Police said Monday that the slayer's 17th victim, a 22-year-old woman, was the first without a prostitution background and the first Hispanic."
"The body of Auestreberta Alvarez, her throat slashed, was found Friday at a South Los Angeles elementary school, and although she had no record of prostitution a police spokesman said the circumstances of her death linked her to the serial slayings that began three years ago."
"The victims were believed lured into car of the killer, who is described as a medium-complexioned black man, 28 to 31 years old, 6-feet to 6-feet-2, about 165 pounds, with a pockmarked face, mustache, curly hair and brown eyes."
"Several women were in the neighborhood Monday distributing composite pictures of the killer drawn from descriptions from two women who survived attacks by the suspect."
Have any of you checked out the McMartin preschool case? Satanic ritual abuse of the kids. Parents would drop them off and they would take them through a tunnel to go be abused by powerful people. Or the Franklin cover up where VIPs were trafficking children from the Catholic orphanage "boys town" into DC to be abused?
Lonnie Franklin was a private in the US Army according to the LA Times but SPCR reported him as an US Army cook/rank E4 (Senior Airman). Another example of where the media doesn't inquire about a DD214 which would clarify Franklin's status and rank.

"The 17-year-old girl was standing alone at a station in Germany awaiting her train ride home when a car pulled up alongside her.
One of three men in the vehicle asked the teenager a question before forcing her into the car, holding a blade firmly against her throat.
“Kill you,” she recalled the men telling her.
It would be the start of an ordeal that would torment her for decades and lead her on Thursday to a downtown Los Angeles courtroom, where she recounted the attack on that night in Stuttgart in 1974. Among her three assailants was Lonnie David Franklin Jr., then a U.S. Army private stationed in Germany, prosecutors allege."

"In one case from the early 1970s, a 17-year-old German girl identified as Ingrid W. was living with her parents in Asperg, Germany, near Stuttgart. Prosecutors refuse to release her last name citing the nature of the crime and her age at the time. She came all the way from Germany to testify.
Franklin was stationed at a nearby U.S. Army base, where he had recently taken on the job of cook. He had an E-4 ranking at the time.
In court Thursday, Deputy District Atty. Beth Silverman carefully asked Ingrid W. to recount the events of a night more than four decades ago. Ingrid was waiting outside of a train station for a ride home after visiting a friend.
Suddenly, a car full of three men, one of them Franklin, pulled up to her.
“They were asking me for an address or directions,” recalled Ingrid.
Her husband stood in the witness box to offer support.
What happened next, asked Silverman. “Somebody grabbed me and pulled me into vehicle,” Ingrid recalled. One man had a knife and held it to her throat.
She recalled driving to a remote area.
“I was raped by all three men,” Ingrid testified. The prosecutor pressed for details. Ingrid wiped her forehead of sweat. Her husband whispered to her. She touched his hand.
“How long did it go?,” Silverman asked.
“The rest of the night.,” Ingrid said. After it was over, she moved to the front seat of the car and “tried to play nice” with her attackers – hoping just to get home, she said
The next day, she went to the police. Police tracked down the three American servicemen in part because she had given one of the men her telephone number when she was playing nice. Police say they tracked down Franklin after he called her.
Franklin’s defense attorney, Seymour Amster, sought to discredit the accounts.
He argued the jury never should have heard from Ingrid because she could not personally identify Franklin.
Judge Kathleen Kennedy quashed his motion to keep her and others associated with the German case from testifying.
At trial, the men tried to convince the German court that it was all consensual. All three were convicted. Franklin was sentenced to three years and four months in prison. He was also discharged from the army."
More interesting quotes from the SCPR article:
"Ingrid never identified Franklin in court. That was left to former U.S. Army Captain Frank Pyle. He was a military attorney assigned to monitor the trial. He recalled taking Franklin’s mother to the trial just about every day.
Pyle believed Franklin was guilty and agreed with German court’s decision. But he didn't recall seeing Franklin as monster.
“He appeared mild mannered and didn’t appear to be a bad guy at the time,” Pyle said. “The court felt like he was probably influenced by the other two servicemen.”
Wow, very interesting how a man known to sell stolen vehicles by police ends up being employed as a mechanic by them. He also worked as a garbage loader, great way to dump a body in a trash can and have your guy come load it up an take it to the dump! Also, Police arrest Franklin dragging a girl inside and they just arrest them, dont even book them, hold and then release...the City of Lost Angels is dark. Hey, it is called Hollywood because ancient druids worshiped nature and the Holly Bush was their most sacred plant so no surprise occultist and killers flock there.

Doesn't really admit to any of the alleged crimes and doesn't know the victims. Just a weird exchange between the detectives and Franklin.
Omg that was the best documentary I ever watched thank you I didn't know that whole story and have so much respect for the maker
How dare that police department take any credit
Another interesting statement - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jun/06/grim-sleeper-death-sentence-women-murder-los-angeles
"Defense lawyers questioned forensic evidence at trial and said DNA from other men was also found on several bodies. They suggested a “mystery man”, possibly a relative of Franklin’s, was the real killer."
Interesting statement in this article - https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-grim-sleeper-serial-killings-case-delayed-20150918-story.html
"Franklin’s attorneys told the judge this year that an expert hired by their team had determined that DNA collected from two crime scenes linked to their client matched convicted serial killer Chester Turner.
"In a motion filed this week, the defense listed more than a dozen other men as “potential biological [donors]” of DNA found at crime scenes linked to Franklin, arguing that the discovery casts "reasonable doubt” as to Franklin’s guilt."

Fascinating case.
You linked Nick Broomfields documentary- his filmography is amazing. From his two Aileen Wuornos docs to Biggie & Tupac, also Kurt & Courtney (the first film to provide evidence that Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain) his films are required viewing. Most are on YT.
Many of these documentaries haunt me to this day...
Another potential accomplice an/or good suspect in the late 80's was Louis Craine who died mysteriously after being sentenced to death in four murders that occured in South Los Angeles - https://homicide.latimes.com/post/louis-craine/
Prosecutor admits "Southside Slayer" possibly was the work of five or more killers and that most of the crimes would not be solved due to destruction of evidence. This was a few years before Lonnie Franklin was arrested - https://www.presstelegram.com/2008/12/17/southside-slayer-was-really-3-5-killers/
Here are some articles on Michael Hughes. According to the link it looks like he is appealing his conviction - http://www.cncpunishment.com/forums/showthread.php?6365-Michael-Hughes-California-Death-Row
This link is on Chester Turner - https://sites.psu.edu/sierrasspace/2015/10/12/the-serial-series-part-5-chester-turner/
Just wanted to add that during the late 80's there were two other possble good suspects and/or accomplices. Michael Hughes who served in the Navy and was murdering in Culver City which is about fifteen minutes away from South Los Angeles and Chester Turner who lived within a few blocks of Lonnie Franklin. They were known as the "Southside Slayer(s)"
