One of the claims Lucas made was that he had delivered cyanide to Jonestown, this always interested me because it seemed kind of out of left field. But recently I came across something I think might partially confirm his story. He and Otis Toole both claimed to have been indoctrinated into the hand of Death by a man named ‘Don Meteric’ who trained them, along with others in a paramilitary camp in the Florida Everglades. I believe this man may have been Dan Mitrione, a CIA agent who taught torture in the Philippines. We know from John Marks book The Search for the Manchurian candidate and Tom O’Neills book Chaos that most CIA agents had cover names/alias and that Sidney Gottlieb‘s was Sherman R. Grifford. Notice how the use of alliteration closely mirrors the consonants in his actual name. Mitrione was a lifelong friend of Jones and one of the strongest connection between Jones and the CIA. This could all be coincidental, but my gut tells me it isn’t.

"R budd dwyer" literally killed himself live on TV 1987 which will always scome up on google above naything else
Wow! No kidding. They really are doppelgangers
What an interesting and plausible theory!! According to Max Call, Meteric was driving a "new 1977" vehicle when he met Lucas. I re-read the passages, but it gives no description of the guy, so his age is unclear. Now officially Mitrione was long dead and he got a hero's farewell. Quite disgusting really. But it was also a very showy funeral. In the book, Call indicates that he changed all names except the ones listed, so it is probable that "Don Meteric" is a fictitious name anyway.
Now having said that, there was apparently some major asshole named Don Meteric in Miami who ran a dive school in 2002.
There was also another satanic Don Meteric who talked about playing bass in a death metal band in 2006.
It is possible these two are the same guy. It possible they could be the guy who met Henry Lee Lucas in 1978 if the name was real, but it would be nearly impossible to have been Mitrione who was born in 1920 unless he was a hip vampire or something.
BUT and this is a BIG OLE butt:
What if Richard Dwyer - the CIA guy who was handing Jim Jones in Jonestown and was present in 1978 during the Jonestown massacre - was actually Dan Mitrione.
Mitrione and Dwyer were were dopplegangers. I made an image for comparison.
Observe:
By Henry Lee Lucas's own account, he ran at least one smuggling errand for Jim Jones by plane and for many reasons, I find his claim very credible. "Meteric" first approached Lucas about smuggling cars. "Meteric" also gave Lucas a contract to assassinate President Carter, Lucas said Oswald was a cultist. This is very high level stuff that precisely someone like Mitrione/Dwyer would've handled.
(That also puts Lucas and Toole's simultaneous rescue from two state's death rows by the Bush family into better context. )
😵
See the episode I did with Patrick about Jim Jones if you didn't already.

Wait.....
There is one more weird thing, that may mean nothing at all. Max Call, the guy who wrote Hand of Death put in the epilogue (around 1985) that while driving to see Henry Lee Lucas in the Texas prison for an interview, it was winter and he picked up a freezing hitchhiker who approached him at a rest stop, dressed for the beach: "he was a strange young man, given to tall tales, and he spun a yarn about being a professional deep water diver whose expensive car had broken down on his way home." Now read about the real life asshole "Divemaster Don Meteric" in the link above again.
Max Call said it didn't seem related, but it was odd enough that he put it in the book. "Meteric" was associated with expensive cars and driving them was the job he had offered Lucas in the first place. 😵
This is a good hypothesis, though Dan Mitrione was apparently murdered in 1970 and Henry Lee Lucas didn't meet "Don Meteric" until the mid-to-late 70s. However, I wouldn't put it past the CIA to have done something like faked his death. In that sense, it is interesting that two different Tupamaros leadership groups, which aimed to keep Mitrione alive, were taken out prior to his murder (http://www.nytimes.com/1987/06/21/world/uruguayan-clears-up-state-of-siege-killing.html):
Raising the possibility that a separate team, perhaps more loyal to the US than the Tupamaros, ended up with this valuable prisoner and faked his death.
