MODESTO -- Carol Sund was so meticulous that she used an Internet mapping service to plan a scenic vacation through the Central Valley to Yosemite National Park. The itinerary also took Sund and two-teenage-girls through a booming center for the nation’s methamphetamine trade. ‘’I know she wasn’t aware of that. She never would have gone. The danger’s there -- why take a chance?’’ said the slain woman’s father, Francis Carrington.

The federal task force investigating the sightseers’ murders has focused on a loose-knit band of meth-using ex-convicts, exposing the drug’s local criminal subculture like never before. And now, finally local law enforcement is getting more help. ‘’The investigation has brought a magnifying glass to a problem that has been hiding under the rocks for too many years,’’ one federal law enforcement official said Wednesday, the day after the Justice Department promised an immediate infusion of $800,000 to coordinate a regional crackdown.

The nine-county Central Valley’s designation as a ‘’high intensity drug trafficking area’’ also could bring up $2.5 million in the next fiscal year.

Federal officials won’t say whether the scores of FBI agents who descended on the area to help solve the disappearance and murders of Sund, her daughter Juli and their Argentine friend Silvina Pelosso made the difference in getting the money. But the attention didn’t hurt.

Local officials, whose similar request for the special drug designation was turned down last year, say the case has raised public consciousness about the diabolical effects of meth, a mind-altering drug known for triggering paranoia, psychosis and particularly violent acts.
‘’The Yosemite murder-kidnapping has certainly demonstrated the gravity of the meth scrough,’’ said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Also known as crystal, speed, ice or glass, meth can be made by amateur chemists anywhere, using lab equipment and chemicals readily available in stores. But is particularly pernicious in the Central Valley, where the Mexican drug rings have pushed aside outlaw biker gangs and made the trade more profitable than ever.

These rings rely on ranch hands and crew leaders to find and guard remote fields or abandoned barns, where mobile super-labs can pump out nearly 100 pounds of meth in less than a day. These caches are then shipped around the country through well-established cocaine distribution networks.
Law enforcement officials say the Mexican rings are responsible for most of the meth hitting the streets. But less than 20 percent of the 1,596 seized by the Drug Enforcement Administration last year were super-labs.
The hired helpers who are caught are usually too loyal, too scared, or too far down the chain to provide information. And they are readily replaced by others willing to overlook the risks for the easy money.
But cranksters also can turn to so-called ‘’Beavis and Butthead’’ labs set up by small-time dealers brewing their own supplies, a source that has become more pervasive with the Internet, where cooks even compete for best recipes.
These smaller labs represent 80 percent of the busts. In many cases, they are discovered only when the ingredients -- which include hydrochloric acid, iodine, Drano and lighter fluid -- explode or poison the cooks.
No charges have been filed in the sightseer murders and no one has disclosed a motive, nut in their effort to solve the case over past four months, FBI agents have entered a netherworld of low-income neighborhoods, trailer parks and mountain hideouts that have long been familiar to deputies serving search warrants for these suspected meth labs.
The task force has been interviewing witnesses and suspects in crumbling houses, littered with the remnants of meth labs, dirty laundry and garbage, whose lives have been destroyed by the drug.
Key grand jury witnesses who have helped the FBI build its case have memories clouded by meth, even when sober. They have slept around, leaving single moms raising kids with different fathers. Usually jobless, they rely on welfare, robberies and other crimes to get by and stay high.
Some have resorted to making and selling the drug themselves. And the FBI has unearthed other violence: petty thefts, domestic abuse, child neglect, attempted murder.
‘’The public needs to understand the devastating impact that methamphetamine is having on everyday society. The consequences of not getting it under control are severe,’’ said FBI Agent James Maddock of Sacramento, who is in charge of the task force.
In the Central Valley, meth busts have become so common that, like traffic accidents, they generate little news coverage unless they are big. So authorities have adopted a new strategy: targeting the rogue chemical companies and stores selling cold and flu tablets in bulk out their back doors.
The pills contain pseudoephedrine, an over-the-counter chemical twin of ephedrine, a key meth ingredient that is tightly controlled. And the dramatic jump in bulk pseudoephedrine imports is an indicator of the meth boom: From 1990 to 1998 imports more than doubled from 247 to 546 metric tons.
‘’And it’s not because people are suffering from colds more often,’’ said U.S. Attorney Paul Seave, who oversees California’s Eatern District for the U.S. Department of Justice.
The new federal money will pay for a computer system to coordinate the work of local drug task forces, as well as public awareness campaigns, new hires, training and special protective gear for dismantling the labs, which leave hazardous waste.
It is welcomed help for the local law enforcement, which put methamphetamine at the top of its agenda for long before Mrs. Sund, Juli and Silvina made their ill-fated trip.
‘’People don’t think about it if they don’t encounter it firsthand,’’ one such official said on condition of anonymity. ‘’In the crank trade, generally they are preying on other people in the drug community. Sometimes, they go outside, with violent consequences.’’

Jens and Carole Sund, who met while attending Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, were married in 1978, and they honeymooned in Yosemite. Soon after Julie's birth, they started planning an extended trip to Argentina, so they could adopt a second child.
Jens' mother was born in El Salvador and his father is Danish, and the couple thought a child from Argentina would be the perfect racial mix for their family, Carole Carrington said. The meticulous Carole Sund packed up all the proper documents in a large folder, her mother said, and the family left for Cordoba with Julie under their arms.
While in Argentina, Jens Sund said, they rented a country home for about a week with Raquel, Jose and Silvina Pelosso, and they stayed with Raquel's parents on their Las Varillas cattle ranch. They traveled to waterfalls near the Brazil border, to Buenos Aires and to the Argentinian grape-growing region.
While they were there, the Argentinian government put a halt to foreign adoptions. Despite pleadings before a judge, the couple went home to America without a new sibling for Julie.
The Sunds eventually settled in Eureka, where Jens took a job with a property management firm connected with the Carrington family's large real estate holdings in the area. They adopted their three other children, and Carole became involved in Eureka-area adoption groups.
The Sunds embraced Silvina when she arrived, taking her to Disneyland almost immediately after she landed, and including her in the family. She wanted to experience California. Her older sister, 20-year-old Paula, had gone to Miami as an exchange student.

"Stayner seems to have maintained a quiet, unexceptional existence for the next several years. Then, one day in 1996, a coworker went out into the yard of Merced Glass and Mirror to find Stayner slamming his fist against a piece of wood and bleeding from cuts on his hand. “He said he felt like he was having a breakdown and said he was all nervous and didn't know why,” the colleague later told the San Francisco Chronicle. “He said he felt like getting in his truck, driving into the office, and killing everyone in there and torching the place.” Stayner's boss drove him to a Merced psychiatric center, where he spoke with a therapist. Stayner never went back to his job again. He told former coworkers that he was thinking of moving to Santa Cruz to pursue a cartooning career."
There are various clues as to how high the Curry Company connections go. The New York Times article I shared above talks about how it was bought by the Music Corporation of America (MCA) in 1973. MCA represented Ronald Reagan throughout his time in Hollywood, and there are indications that the Reagan Administration protected MCA from scrutiny of its ties to organized crime: https://www.moldea.com/MCAMusic.html Of course, Parnell's employment back in 1972 makes me think that the Curry Company was up to no good prior to that, and the mob-connected MCA was just a friendly place to park it.
Cheri Seymour writes in The Last Circle:
With these connections to the local power structure of Mariposa County, it is no wonder that their law enforcement would be offering so much protection of the company's drug trafficking operation.
The link to Tony Coleho is especially interesting. Coelho rose from a virtual unknown to one of the highest level figures in the Democratic Party during the 1980s, working alongside another rising star Charles Manatt who represented the real estate developer that leased a plane to CIA drug trafficker Barry Seal (https://www.copvcia.com/free/politics/demo_party_prez.html):
Even more startlingly, Coelho was an acquaintance of and financially involved with Wall Street junk bond dealer Michael Milken (https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1989-04-13-mn-1726-story.html):
Coelho's junk bond purchase turned out to be tied to a savings and loan company that would later become a figure in the S&L scandals of the late 80s and early 90s; and of course, many of those S&L plunders were really to fund CIA operations during the Iran-Contra period (https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1989-05-14-mn-405-story.html):
And in short order, Coelho resigned, lamenting the "supercharged climate of ethical scrutiny" that tarred him despite being "certain he had done nothing wrong" (https://www.nytimes.com/1989/05/27/us/coelho-to-resign-his-seat-in-house-in-face-of-inquiry.html). But he remained a well-connected figure, serving in private industry, disability groups, a congressional committee deciding what intelligence agencies should do after the fall of the Soviet Union, and Al Gore's campaign as previously noted. Indeed, Coelho could be partially credited with the flagrant Wall Street takeover of the Democratic Party embodied by the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) and its operatives like Michael Steinhardt and Bill Clinton (https://newrepublic.com/article/72327/return-the-shyster).
Coelho, in other words, was extremely close to some powerful Wall Street players including Michael Milken and quite possibly Michael Steinhardt. And the influence of that group continues to this day. Milken's right-hand man at Drexel Burnham Lambert was Leon Black, the Apollo Global Management founder who was recently in the news for financing Jeffrey Epstein to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. Milken himself was partying in February 2000 at Mar-a-Lago alongside Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, Donald Trump, and Prince Andrew (https://www.newspapers.com/clip/33777002/the_palm_beach_post/). Trump pardoned Milken back in February 2020.
An interesting segment of a book titled The Miscreants' Global Bust-Out alleges (https://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=64443878) that a network of Wall Street financiers headed by Milken interfaced with transnational organized crime and Islamic terror networks responsible for 9/11. One of the players here was a former Deutsche Bank executive named Kevin Ingram, who was arrested in 2001 for shipping Stinger missiles to the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Deutsche Bank is a known facilitator of organized crime that was also used by Jeffrey Epstein among others. Shortly before 9/11, Deutsche Bank purchased the investment firm Alex. Brown & Sons, which was run by future CIA executive director and apparent longtime CIA operative Buzzy Krongard; it was through this bank that many suspicious insider trades suggesting foreknowledge of 9/11 were placed. Mayo Shattuck III, the head of Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown, resigned from his post on September 12, 2001.
In other words, it seems clear that Michael Milken was running a major organized crime network that intersected with both Jeffrey Epstein and the 9/11 operation. Various 9/11 players tie back to the Iran-Contra operation, as does Epstein given his alleged involvement with Adnan Khashoggi and his handler Les Wexner's role in getting CIA smuggling airline Southern Air Transport relocated to the Rickenbacker airport in Ohio. The Mariposa County drug operation happened during the same time as Iran-Contra, and involved small planes making protected drug drops at an airport, reminiscent of what was going on in other locales like Mena, Arkansas. And Coelho was connected with Milken, a seemingly corrupt S&L (which were themselves often involved in Iran-Contra financing), a lawyer who helped lease Barry Seal a plane, and the head of the Curry Company which spearheaded the Mariposa County operation.
It is clear that we are looking at one continuous network that intersects with US (and foreign) intelligence, high finance, and organized crime syndicates. The activities of Jeffrey Epstein and financial institutions like Deutsche Bank almost certainly connect to what was going on in Mariposa County. And perhaps they still do, as suggested by the fact that former Kroll (that is to say, private CIA) employee Roy Den Hollander was credited with murdering two people in July of last year: California lawyer Marc Angelucci, who was representing a Mariposa County defendant Jerry Cox that had been set up on false rape charges and had his land (close to the Mariposa airport that was a site for drug drops) stolen by the county; and the son of Judge Esther Salas, who had just been assigned the Deutsche Bank case.
Another apparent pedophilia connection comes through M. Scott Connelly, the local prosecutor in Yosemite National Park who served as a liaison between the US Attorney's office and the park rangers. Park ranger Paul Berkowitz accused Connelly of illegal practices during the Curry Company investigation, and referred to the apparently well-known fact that Connelly was a pedophile:
Connelly would finally go down on child molestation charges a decade later; but even then, some of the initial allegations against him, particularly kidnapping a boy, were downplayed (Fresno Bee, "EX-RANGER PLEADS GUILTY IN UNLAWFUL-SEX CASE", 1998/09/24):
By the way, there is a substantial element of the Yosemite murders story that is worth exploring and might explain the odd "coincidences" that befell the Stayner family: how Steven and Cary's cases were both linked to the Curry Company.
The Yosemite Park and Curry Company was the longtime concessions operator in the park, running most of their lodges, restaurants, etc. Employees of those facilities, therefore, were employed by the Curry Company itself. And that included Steven's abductor Ken Parnell and Parnell's accomplice Ervin Murphy.
From p.38-39 of I Know My First Name Is Steven by Mike Echols (1989, 1999):
Interesting that it is outright stated that "ex-felons" and other unsavory individuals "made up the bulk of the Curry Company's Yosemite employees". Indeed, the Curry Company was quite derelict in hiring Parnell at all. From p.212 of The Yosemite Murders by Dennis McDougal (1999):
Of course, there is a lot that is suspicious about Steven's abduction. It is quite odd that authorities never charged Parnell with any of the countless sexual assaults he committed against Steven, thereby ensuring his sentence would be relatively light in the scheme of things. The fact that so many case figures met untimely deaths — Steven in a 1989 motorcycle accident, Mike Echols in 2003 of a pulmonary embolism, and Timothy White in 2010 also of a pulmonary embolism — is unsettling. Also, it is known that Parnell had some connection to Daniel Marvin Yert, a child pornographer previously swept up in the 1973 operation that exposed Guy Strait and Billy Byars Jr. among others (San Francisco Examiner, "Twisted love: portrait of Kenneth Parnell", 1980/03/06 (pages 1, 6)):
And of course it is oddly coincidental that Parnell would tell Steven that he was legally made Steven's new guardian with the consent of his parents, only for it to later come out in Cary's trial that the Stayner family was full of pedophiles: including their father Delbert Stayner who molested one of Steven and Cary's sisters, and an uncle who molested Cary. Myself and others (including LOLFIELDANDLOVE) suspect that Steven may have in fact been given over by his family through an underground child sex ring that the Stayners and Parnell were both part of. And if that's the case, Parnell's employer may be significant.
A decade later, it would come out that the Curry Company was complicit in the drug trafficking rings that operated in Yosemite National Park. This was the same operation that was protected by Mariposa County law enforcement, as described in the ABC 20/20 episode that LOLFIELDANDLOVE linked above, Cheri Seymour's book The Last Circle, and part of Stephen Sanzeri's book Ultimate Prey. And it is almost certainly the same drug operation that Paul Candler, Eugene Dykes, Michael Larwick, Cary Stayner, Billy Joe Strange, et. al. were all part of; hence why all of the perpetrators except Stayner were covered up.
Here is an early article as the case was unfolding: New York Times, "FEDERAL DRUG INVESTIGATION FOCUSES ON YOSEMITE PARK", 1981/09/12:
Note the hints at sex rings, in addition to the drug trafficking which is most widely focused on, being a part of the case too. In fact, "sex and drug parties" were said to occur at Yosemite Lodge, where Ken Parnell worked... But the ever-trustworthy Mike Echols — who was accused by Steven's surviving family of making I Know My First Name Is Steven pornographic in nature, faced a number of indecent exposure raps, and once claimed (almost certainly falsely) that he was the source of Paul Bonacci's information on NAMBLA — says that Parnell had no friends at Yosemite Lodge other than Ervin Murphy, so I suppose we can rule that connection out.
(Also, I'd have to find the timestamp again, but that ABC 20/20 video on Mariposa County made a throwaway reference to law enforcement protecting some kind of "pornography ring", once again indicating that this was more than just drugs.)
Cary was evidently a low-level functionary in the Yosemite drug ring. He was perpetually in the company of people like Paul Candler and Eugene Dykes, likely taking orders. How he got to be part of the ring is unknown, but one article from 2001 suggests it was a family connection through his uncle (http://www.rumormillnews.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?read=6582):
By "uncle" they presumably mean Cary's uncle Jesse Stayner. It is still unclear whether or not Jesse is the same uncle who molested Cary as a child. Cary was living with Jesse before Jesse was shot to death in 1990, a case that has never been solved. Police suspected Cary of murdering his uncle at one point, but it would perhaps make more sense, and fit with the Rumor Mill News article, if Jesse was killed in a mob-type hit over his involvement in drug trafficking. If the article is true, then it seems that the Stayner family groomed Cary into this local drug trafficking operation...which is under the auspices of the Curry Company.
So could this be what ties together the tragedies of both Stayner sons? Did the Stayner family have a longstanding tie with the Curry Company's local drug and sex trafficking rings, resulting in Steven being sold into child sex slavery and Cary being programmed as a low-level functionary of the drug network?

Keddie Murders: Drug Smuggling Sheriff, The Queen's Accident, Mariposa County
Wilseyville, California, 1985.
Among the victims from Leonard Lake & Charles Ng found there were Lonnie Bond and Brenda O’Connor, who had been running a methamphetamine lab on the adjacent property. Killed along with the couple were their son, Lonnie Bond, Jr., and Robin Stapley, who had been one of the founders of the San Diego chapter of the Guardian Angels. Stapley had been involved in running the meth lab.

Under a carport, protected from 100-degree sunshine, is the collection of chemicals -- sulphuric acid and nitric acid.
Police speculate that Lake, 39, and Ng, 24 used the chemicals in a makeshift laboratory to brew batches of illegal methamphetamine or to fuel the high-temperature fires needed to cremate remains of the victims.
Supporting the latter theory is a 9-foot-square incinerator between Lake's home and that of his neighbors.
